The Management and Control of High Voltage Systems in accordance with IS EN 50110 – 1 & 2, and compliance with SI 299 with respect to Safe Places of Work and Safe Systems of Work.

The Management and Control of High Voltage (HV) Systems – Application of IWEA Best Practice Guidelines for Windfarm Electrical Operation & Electrical Switching in accordance with IS EN 50110 – 1 & 2, as applied to wind farm HV infrastructure.

Describing  the legal requirements for management, monitoring and control of a place of work that contains HV Systems . Defining the Roles and Responsibilities as set out in the applicable national standards including the appropriate Competence requirements. Explaining the processes and procedures required in setting people to work on the HV system, close to the HV system and in the HV environment, including the management of system boundary points.

Investigation of HV System Rules and the control regimes appropriate to working on or close to boundary points involving 2 System Controllers and HV System Rule sets.

Course Objectives

Provide a detailed appreciation of the requirements of Irish and European Standard, ISEN 50110-1:2013 and best practice in regard to the management and operation of HV Systems and equipment with a particular focus on their application to a windpower generation  assets.

Provide an appreciation of the legal requirements applicable to the  management of electrical installations as required by Irish legislation.

Explain the role and importance of HV Rules in regard to managing and operating a HV installation.

Explain responsibilities and define Roles for individuals charged with the management, operation and maintenance of HV equipment.

Clarify competence required for Roles and individuals involved in the management, operation and maintenance of HV equipment.

Explain the importance of assessing competence of contractors and individuals.

Provide knowledge and training to enable delegates to implement electrical safety in electrical operations and maintenance activities.

Provide an understanding of electrical risks associated with electrical installations specific to wind energy assets and the development of a site-specific risk assessment.

Introduction to Electrical Risk, Hazards and Injury.

Section 3:

Roles, Responsibilities, Terms and Definitions, including delegation of tasks and competence requirements.

Section 4:

Basic Principles of Operation and Work Organisation including HV Rules, duties and responsibilities for individuals, tools, PPE, emergency procedures, communication, drawings, records and documentation.

Section 5:

Operational procedures including types of operation, activities, testing, measurement and management of boundaries.

Section 6:

Working Procedures including methods, planning, working zones, types of activities, voltage categories, dead working practices, safe distances, disconnection, earthing, reconnection, notifications, 

signs, locks, barriers, screens, vicinity of live conductors, live working practices, weather conditions and non-electrical activities.

Section 7:

Maintenance procedures including activities, personnel, fault investigation, handover.

Section 8:

Case Studies including Windpower generation asset management

Assessment and feedback.
