Energy Vision 2030
Ireland must develop a National Energy and Climate Plan by the end of 2018, which will include a 2030 Energy Target across electricity, heating and transport. Wind energy has played a key role in achieving Ireland’s 2020 renewable energy target of 40% renewable electricity, but this is only the start. Wind energy, along with other forms of renewable electricity can continue to grow out to 2030 and the ’70 by 30’ report outlines how Ireland can increase its renewable electricity share to 70%, without increasing the cost of electricity for the consumer. To do so will not only require additional renewable electricity, but a range of ‘integration technologies’ such as batteries and interconnection. Similarly, Ireland’s renewable electricity can be used to also provide renewable heat and transport via electrification with heat pumps and electric vehicles. The 70 by 30 report sets out one scenario where a combination of these measures will increase Ireland’s renewable electricity share to 70% by 2030, without increasing the cost.
