Asset Management In the Wind Sector A Foundation Course (Certification Available)

This course will run on the 15th, 17th and 22nd of June. 3 1/2 Days

This course provides a foundation in understanding the basic concepts, language and significant benefits organisations gain from an Asset Management (AM) approach.  The course explores the key challenges facing the wind sector in Ireland.  The course will consist of 12 hours intensive and interactive virtual teaching and will leverage the unrivalled ESS and Woodhouse Academy knowledge base and expert tutorial team.  Key features of the course are:

• Maximising value from wind sector assets
• Aligned to PAS55, ISO 55000 and the IAM competency framework
• Influence decisions that have Asset management implications
• Specific focus on common challenges facing the wind sector in Ireland

The course is designed to provide basic appreciation of what asset management is, and why it matters to organisations and their stakeholders. 

It focusses on the major asset management issues facing the wind sector in Ireland.  People attending the course will acquire a strong understanding of asset management principles and how they can contribute to maximising value within their organisations. 

Those who complete the course will be equipped to take the Institute of Asset Management’s (IAM) Knowledge Test (Separate Fee required).

This course is specifically designed to be useful to people in a wide range of functions, the potential audience will include:

• New entrants to organisations (including trainees), who may go on to work in asset management roles.
• People moving within organisations to undertake their first asset management role.

The course then explores good practice AM and what it looks like.  Including discussion of some commonly used techniques:

• Understanding stakeholders and their requirements – including examples of Stakeholders, and ways they could affect an organisation’s AM activities.
• Alignment of AM activities to deliver organisational objectives - AM Policy, AM strategies (the SAMP),
• AM plans and delivery of life cycle activities.
• Understanding and managing risk.
  • Risk definitions (ISO 55000) and the risk matrix.
  • Understanding criticality (of assets and AM activities).
• Risk management processes (ISO 31000) – assessment, treatment and monitoring.
• Whole life decision-making.
  • Examples of asset life cycle costs.
• Typical asset life decisions - when, and why, it is important to consider asset life cycle costs.
• Effective monitoring and assurance.
  • Assets - understanding condition and performance.
  • Asset management activities – monitoring and audit.
• Team working and collaboration.
• ISO 55000 - the good practice management system standard for AM (benefits and overview).

Asset Management Journey

• The Organisational AM Journey.
• Where and how to start? Assessment of AM capability.
• Developing AM competences (the 7 key roles of the IAM Competences Framework).
• The Individual AM Journey - developing your AM knowledge & understanding
• IAM resources to support the Individual and Organisational Journeys

Throughout the course we will explore issues specific to the wind energy sector in general and in Ireland in particular.  This targeted approach will enable the delegates to apply Asset Management concepts in their own day to day work contributing to value creation within their organisation.

Alex Thomson is a highly experienced Chartered Engineer and Asset Management expert.  He has a proven track record within Asset Management across all asset lifecycle phases extending over 25 years in multiple industry sectors.

  He can develop and deliver strategic objectives within diverse and demanding environments and is fully conversant with Management System Standards.  Alex is a clear and concise communicator with excellent people skills at all levels from shop floor to boardroom.

Alex has been involved in the development of both the PAS 55 and ISO 55000 series of standards and a variety of assessment and roadmap development projects. He has also contributed to the authoring of the IAM’s Competencies Framework and Asset Management an Anatomy documents.

Alex was also Process Development Team Lead in the multi-industry research project, SALVO, to develop new processes, methods and tools for managing aging assets.  Recently Alex has lead projects within the wind sector to implement Asset Management Systems conforming with ISO 55001.
