The Spine H2-IRL Project Information Session

Spine H2-IRL is a research project funded by SEAI and the project team consist of Energy Reform, Mullan Grid and Wind Energy Ireland. Previous studies comprehensively show that hydrogen can potentially play a significant role in decarbonising the Irish energy system. However, there are key unanswered questions around security of supply, resiliency, and system flexibility service requirements. This project aims to extend the existing models and analysis to provide concrete policy guidance on these critical issues.

The 18-month project will discuss the potential of hydrogen-based technologies in Ireland’s energy system. To comprehensively address the security of supply and flexibility services aspects of the energy system, detailed models need to be developed and tested. In support of this work, consultation with stakeholders will be carried out for the full duration of the project.

WEI as the lead dissemination partner for the project, is facilitating an Information Session on the 31st of January 2024 to communicate the progress the project has achieved to date. This will be the first opportunity to share the inputs and high-level assumptions from the 6 core scenarios that have been identified. The purpose of the session is not only to promote the work of the SPINE H2-IRL project and the importance of modelling hydrogen storage in the Irish energy system, but to gather feedback to refine the scenarios and potentially identify future research opportunities.

There will be one main presentation from Energy Reform on the Spine H2-IRL project, approximately 20 minutes in length, followed by 20 minutes of Q&A. There will then be two shorter presentations from other similar projects across different institutions, approximately 10 minutes in length each.

There will then be a further 20 minutes of Q&A to address any final questions.
