If implemented, plan could be a landmark on road to energy independence
The Irish wind energy industry has warmly welcomed the publication this morning of the Accelerating Infrastructure Report and Action Plan.
The report includes several recommendations which, if implemented, would speed up the planning process for critical infrastructure and particularly for projects to strengthen Ireland’s electricity grid.
Wind Energy Ireland CEO Noel Cunniffe said: “Our system for delivering critical infrastructure in Ireland, including renewable energy, is not fit for purpose and this has been true for a long time.
“Today’s comprehensive report identifies critical actions that can speed up the delivery of clean, affordable, electricity to Irish families and businesses. It means a stronger electricity grid, greater electrification and a more resilient economy.
“This is not a plan that can be allowed to sit on a shelf. The inclusion of detailed actions, timelines and real accountability in making DPER’s infrastructure division responsible for its implementation is a clear reflection of the Government’s commitment to delivery.
“It is a commitment our industry will match and we are ready to work alongside Government to ensure these actions are delivered and that the publication of this report is remembered as a key landmark on our journey to energy independence.”
Resources
Wind Energy Ireland also highlighted that delivering the plan would need political will but also State agencies and Government departments with the resources to act.
Noel Cunniffe continued: “The lack of resources to deliver infrastructure is a defining characteristic of many of the State agencies and Government departments identified in this report. Along with these responsibilities must come the funding to put in place people with the experience and expertise to deliver.”
